Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune’s exclusion from the Amakhosi team in midweek has raised eyebrows after he turned out for Bafana Bafana during the FIFA international break.
The shot-stopper has been left out of the Chiefs starting line-up for their four most recent games, including three before the international break as well as the one against Jomo Cosmos on Tuesday.
Prior to Bafana’s Central American tour Chiefs indicated that Khune had been excluded as a precautionary measure, as he was carrying an injury.
However, Khune still managed to travel with Shakes Mashaba’s charges and played in both international friendlies, against Costa Rica and Honduras respectively.
Sources in the Chiefs camp explained to the Siya crew that the goalkeeper was still carrying an injury and that’s why he was left out of the Cosmos game, however SAFA's Director of Communications, Dominic Chimhavi, suggested otherwise.
“This issue of him travelling with the team while he was injured is neither here nor there. He was the best player on the tour and even the first-choice Real Madrid goalkeeper commended him for his performance,” Chimhavi explained.
“(Keylor) Navas was even surprised (as to) why Khune is still playing locally, at home, and I don’t think he could have performed that well if he was carrying an injury,” he added.
Chiefs had also indicated that they allowed Khune to join Bafana as they wanted to avoid a similar incident to that of Tsepo Masilela, who recently failed to honour a call-up, subsequently appearing before the SAFA Disciplinary Committee.
What is your take on Khune’s situation? Do you think there is something going on between him and the club? Or could it have something to do with Reyaad Pieterse’s situation? Have your say below.
