Musona Inspires Chiefs Win

Absa Premiership

Full Time: Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 Platinum Stars

Date: 21 September 2013

Venue: FNB Stadium

An inspired substitute appearance from Knowledge Musona saw the Zimbabwean come off the bench to score the winner as Kaizer Chiefs beat Platinum Stars 2-1 in an Absa Premiership match at the FNB Stadium on Saturday night.

Bernard Parker gave Chiefs the lead after 20 minutes, but the Amakhosi defence went to sleep and allowed Stars to draw level in the dying seconds of the first half courtesy of a Tintswalo Tshabalala goal.

Chiefs certainly started the more positive of the two sides and saw the majority of possession, but the first real chance on goal came at the other end in the 12th minute when Mogakolodi Ngele flashed a shot just wide of goal from 14-yards out.

Six minutes later, however, and Chiefs threatened for the first time after a text book counter-attack saw George Lebese drive down the right and square a pin-point pass for Lehlohonolo Majoro, but the unmarked striker completely fluffed his shot.

Majoro should really have scored a minute later when Siybonga Nkosi played him through on goal and with just the keeper to beat, but Majoro’s attempted chip was over the crossbar.

Chiefs did make their pressure tell in the 21st minute as Parker opened the scoring with an acrobatic volley from 12-yards out after meeting an Nkosi cross from the left, 1-0.

Ten minutes later and Nkosi missed a golden chance after some confusion saw the goalkeeper off his line and out of his goal, but the midfielder fired wide with an empty net as his mercy.

Chiefs were made to pay for their missed opportunities in the dying seconds of the half as Itumeleng Khune palmed a powerful Siphelele Mthembu shot straight into the path of Tintswalo Tshabalala who slotted home, 1-1.

The second 45 saw a change in roles as Platinum Stars saw more of the ball, but failed to make use of it as Chiefs looked the more threatening in the final third.

In the 60th minute Knowledge Musona was thrown on in place of Majoro and he made an impact right away forcing a corner-kick seven minutes later after seeing a shot deflected inches wide.

It was from this corner that the Zimbabwean striker scored as he rose highest at the near post to head the ball over a stranded Stars keeper, 2-1.

The visiting side tried to fight their way back into the game and came bitterly close in the 70th minute as 25-yard free-kick from Vuyo Mere struck the crossbar with Khune well-beaten.

It was a tense game after that, but the Amakhosi managed to hold on for the win.
