The South African Police Service provided an update on the arrest of an Orlando Pirates player and gave further details on the charge.
On Sunday evening, Pirates confirmed that midfielder Nkanyiso Zungu was charged at the Moffatview Police Station, although the club failed to provide details.
In a club statement, the Buccaneers said, "Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm that midfielder Nkanyiso Zungu has been charged at the Moffatview Police Station this evening. The club suspends Mr Zungu pending an investigation. As this matter is currently in the hands of the authorities, the Club is unable to make further comment until this process is complete."
In a statement to the Siya crew, the police confirmed that Zungu was arrested for the alleged assault of his partner.
According to the SAPS, the player is expected to appear at the Booysens Magistrates Court today on a charge of common assault, for allegations of domestic violence.
"A 26-year-old professional soccer player was arrested by the police in Johannesburg on Sunday 13 March 2022 for the alleged assault of his partner. He is expected to appear at Booysens Magistrates Court on Monday 14 March 2022 facing a charge of common assault under domestic violence," reads the statement.
