Kaizer Chiefs are in line to win a major honour after being nominated for the South African Team of the Year Award at this year's SA Sports Awards. However, Chiefs face stiff competition from fellow nominees - the Springboks and the Proteas. The awards ceremony takes place this weekend on Sunday, November 17.
The Boks had a largely successful season when they finished second to the All Blacks in the recently completed Rugby Championship. The team is currently ranked second place in the International Rugby Board standings and trail New Zealand by only a handful of points.
Meanwhile, Chiefs also stand a great chance of being named as Team of the Year. Last season the Glamour Boys claimed the league and cup double - club's first league title win since the 2004/05 campaign. In addition, club captain, Itumeleng Khune, is also nominated for the SA Sportsman and Sports Star of the Year Awards.
However, it could be that the Proteas are strong favourites to take the Team of the Year gong. The national cricket team are the number one ranked test nation in the world and recently swept aside Pakistan in a one day international series.
The winners will be announced at a gala dinner to be held at Sun City on Sunday, November 17.
