Banyana Fall To Cameroon In AWC Opener
African Women's Championship
Result: Banyana Banyana 0-1 Cameroon
Date: 12 October 2014
Venue: Independence Stadium
A late Raissa Feudjio goal handed Cameroon a 1-0 win over Banyana Banyana in their opening African Women's Championship clash at the Independence Stadium.
The opening exchanges proved to be an evenly contested affair with both sides showing intent on attacking, while Cameroon's Yango Grace came close as she volleyed just wide of the mark inside the opening five minutes.
Banyana went even closer in the 12th minute, as an un-marked Noko Matlou rifled a powerful effort against the upright from the edge of the area.
As the half went Vera Pauw's side started to see more of the ball, most notably veteran, Portia Modise, although the Cameroonians did well to keep her out of the danger zones.
Cameroon's only real threat came from dead ball situations, with Banyana keeper Roxanne Barker looking less then convincing when coming out for crosses.
The second half got off to a slow start with both sides being restricted to long range efforts, none of which forced either goalkeeper into saves.
Cameroon almost took the lead in the 70th minute, but Enganamouit's acrobatic effort flew inches wide of the upright.
Banyana shot-stopper, Barker, came to her side's rescue three minutes later, as she pulled off a fine save to deny Onguene from close range.
Cameroon eventually took the lead in the 86th minute, after a mistake between Barker and her defender saw Raissa Feudjio slot into an empty net for the win.
