Sanlam My Choice Hall OF Fame
Another tough decision faces us in the face - which legend to choose next for the Sanlam My Choice Hall of Fame to house our late heroes.
Here are the next three options to choose from:
The father of the living legend Doctor Khumalo. Eliakim Khumalo was one of the most celebrated football icons of our lifetime. Nicknamed "The Professor" for his critical abilities on the field, he featured in over 200 games for Moroka Swallows before moving over to Kaizer Chiefs and spending a large portion of his career there. He went on to coach Amakhosi six times, resulting in many trophies for the Glamour Boys before moving on to coach the development structures. He was tragically shot and killed in a highjacking outside his home in 1996.
"Scara" is a nickname that has been afforded to a number of footballers through the years, however, one of the originals was Jomo Sono's father - Eric. He was one of the most iconic figures in the 50's and 60's as the captain of Orlando Pirates. He was said to be one of the most loved and famous figures to have ever played football in South Africa. "Scara" Sono tragically died in a car accident in 1964 at the age of 27. Reports from the wake of his funeral state that his funeral was the most highly attended in the history of the greater Johannesburg area up until that point.
Another player who put South Africa in the history books and on the map was Johanneson. He was the first black man of any nationality to play top flight football in England, as well as the first African player to play in a FA Cup final. He was born in Germiston but died in Leeds. He spent the majority of his career with Leeds United, and the remainder in York City.
