South African-born Thabang Maponya has signed a professional contract with one of Spain’s third tier clubs.
The 21-year-old midfielder is a product of the FootballCV Academy, which is based in Stamford, England, and caters for football development while also providing the players with educational qualifications.
The player has since secured a chance at professional European football without coming through the ranks of South Africa’s top flight, or any of the lower leagues.
Caudal Deportivo, a club in Spain’s third tier league, announced the signing of Maponya on Tuesday.
Deportivo is currently in 15th place on the league table after 25 matches played.
Maponya now joins a list of many South African youngsters currently plying their trade abroad, including Haashim Domingo, Luther Singh and Liam Jordan (all in Portugal).
