Reports in Italy suggest that Milan are considering an approach for the 24-year-old, who has impressed for Ajax this season.
It is suggested that Milan would be prepared to pay a fee around €5 million (R66.4 million).
However, it is also claimed that Serero’s move to Serie A could depend on whether Milan qualify for European competition.
The struggling Italian giants are currently in tenth position and eight points behind the Europa League spots.
While Serero’s contract at Ajax still runs until 2017, another stumbling block to the transfer could be restrictions on players from outside Europe. It is reported that Milan would have to offload one of their Ghanaian duo, Sulley Muntary and Michael Essien.
Serero joined Ajax from Ajax Cape Town in 2011 for R25 million and, has developed into a first-team regular, after initially struggling to adapt to the European game.
