Newly appointed Kaizer Chiefs coach, Steve Komphela, is looking forward to facing his former charges, Maritzburg United, in what will be his first competitive game in charge of the Amakhosi.
The former Bafana Bafana coach made the switch from Maritzburg to Chiefs in the off-season and will face the tough task of following in the footsteps of the man he is replacing, Stuart Baxter.
The first competitive outing of Komphela’s 2015/16 reign will come against the Team of Choice in the MTN8, a trophy the Amakhosi won under Baxter and will be hoping to defend.
Speaking to Chiefs’ official website, Komphela is acutely aware of the circumstances and is interested in seeing how his former team line up against his new charges.
"It is still early in the preparations stage, but, we have a trophy and pride to defend. It’s very interesting, I was part of their (Maritzburg’s) DNA. It will be interesting to see how they come at us. I helped them build a winning team now, I have to beat them,” he said.
Chiefs play their MTN8 quarter-final against Maritzburg at the FNB Stadium on August 5 and four days later begin the defence of their PSL crown against Chippa United when they travel to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
