The Argentine ended the La Liga campaign with 37 goals, lifting the prestigious Pichichi title in Spain. His 37 goals equal 74 points in the European Golden Shoe table, because the La Liga accumulator is two.

While Edinson Cavani is Europe's second best goalscorer with 35 goals in Ligue 1, he only sits in ninth position in the Golden Shoe ranking. The French top flight is not considered among Europe's top leagues by UEFA and, as a consequence, Cavani's goals are only multiplied by 1.5.

Sporting Lisbon striker Bas Dost therefore follows in second spot in the official Golden Shoe ranking, having netted 34 times in Portugal, which accounts for 68 Golden Shoe points.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finished the ranking in third spot with 31 Bundesliga goals and 62 points, one goal ahead of Robert Lewandowski (30 goals, 60 points).

However, the ranking is not yet final as Serie A clubs are still need to play one final game round this weekend. But the likes of Edin Dzeko, currently on 28 goals, and Dries Mertens, with 27 strikes, would need ridiculous goal feasts in their final league matches to dethrone Messi as the new Golden Shoe holder.

Messi's rival Ronaldo is currently in 10th position in the ranking, having netted 25 La Liga goals, which account for 50 Golden Shoe points.

Here are the top 10 Golden Shoe contenders:

1) Lionel Messi (Barcelona) – 37 goals [x2] 74 points

2) Bas Dost (Sporting Lisbon) – 34 goals [x2] 68 points

3) Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Borussia Dortmund) – 31 goals [x2] 62 points

4) Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) – 30 goals [x2] 60 points

5) Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur) – 29 goals [x2] 58 points

6) Luis Suarez (Barcelona) – 28 goals [x2] 56 points

7) Edin Dzeko (Roma) – 28 goals [x2] 56 points

8) Dries Mertens (Napoli) – 27 goals [x2] 54 points

9) Edinson Cavani (PSG) – 35 goals [x1.5] 52.5 points

10) Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) – 25 goals [x2] 50 points
