The Argentine has scored 11 goals in all competitions since the turn of the year, which is three goals more than he had at the same stage in 2012.

In 2012, Messi started the year with six La Liga goals and two in the Copa del Rey. He scored his ninth goal of the year on Valentine's Day that year.

In 2015, however, Messi has already scored eight La Liga goals, plus an additional three in the Copa del Rey.

In his record year, Messi added an additional five goals by the end of February to finish the first two months of the year on 14 goals.

The 27-year-old has four games - La Liga clashes against Levante, Malaga and Granada, as well as a Champions League tie with Manchester City - to stay ahead of his record year.

Of his 91 goals at the end of the 2012 calendar year, which saw him beat Gerd Muller’s world record of 85 goals in 1972, Messi scored 12 for Argentina and 79 for Barcelona.
