When it comes down to records there is always some sort of debate that rises and in Germany it’s not much different. Uwe Seeler scored 404 goals in 476 first flight matches before the current format of the Bundesliga was implemented and the top scorer since then is Gerd Müller with 365 goals in 427 outings.

In England Jimmy Greaves is the current top goal-scorer with a tally of 357 goals. In the Premier League era (since 1992) Alan Shearer leads the way with 260 strikes.

Silvio Piola is on top of the charts in Italy with 274 goals in 537 games. Piola began his career in 1929 and did not hang up his boots until 1954. A more familiar name, Francesco Totti, sits in second with 235 goals, but behind Messi.

In France we have Delio Onnis heading the list after finding the back of the net 299 times in 449 games between 1971 and 1986 for Stade de Reins, Monaco, Tours and Sporting Toulon.

Remarkably, there is a tie between Arsenio Erico and Ángel Labruna in Argentina who both netted 293 goals over their careers.

Other goal machines to note in the less prestigious leagues include Fernando Peyroteo (330 goals in 197 games in Portgual), Willy van der Kuijlen (311 in 545 in the Dutch league) and Bert De Cleyn (377 in 488 in Belgium).
