The start of the year also marked the beginning of a new decade, in which fans will see many of the sport's great servants retire. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo both fall into this category, as do many top African players across the globe.

Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 31, is likely to hang up his boots before the end of the decade, and perhaps Liverpool's dynamic attacking duo of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane will too.

While both forwards are still just 28 years old and have plenty left in the tank, it is difficult to imagine the Egypt and Senegal superstars continuing for another 10 years, especially considering the pace at which they operate.

Premier Soccer League icons such as Itumeleng Khune, 33, and Siphiwe Tshabalala, 35, are also likely to call it a day on their respective careers in this decade, as well as Uganda and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango.
