Spurs Continue Fine Form

Tottenham Hotspur continued their unbeaten start to the UEFA Europa League group stages with a 2-0 win away to Anzhi Makhachkala.

The English Premier League side enjoyed an impressive opening 45 minute where Jermain Defoe and Nacer Chadli got onto the scoresheet.

Both sides struggled for chances in the second period though as Spurs secured the win.

The atmosphere would have been daunting for the visitors at a chilly Anzhi-Arena, but despite being opened up by a long ball early on, where the offside flag came to their rescue, they looked the likeliest to find an opener.

Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas also took the chance to make some changes, giving Erik Lamela, Sandro, Vlad Chriches, Ezekiel Fryers and Lewis Holtby a run.

Holtby, who has looked bright whenever he has played this season, continued his decent combination play with Defoe, and would eventually go on to create the opening goal.

The midfielder found himself in space in the 34th minute and slipped a pass through to Defoe who slammed his finish into the roof of the net.

Their second of the night arrived just five minutes later when Kyle Walker was given time on the flank and he did not disappoint with a perfect cross to Chadli who supplied the finish.

Anzhi improved after the interval but despite the mesmerising chanting from their home fans, Spurs stood firm to limit the opportunities.

Pavel Solomatin came close to pulling a goal back with five minutes left in the game but his bouncing shot was palmed away by Hugo Lloris.

There was still time for Spurs to add a third in the final minute but Defoe unusually decided to pass instead of shoot and the chance was gone.
