Madrid See Off Betis To Move Joint-Top

Real Madrid produced a fine performance to condemn struggling Real Betis to the foot of the table, with a 5-0 win away from home.

Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, Angel di Maria and Alvaro Morata ensured Madrid move into joint top of the La-Liga for the first time since mid-September.

Betis are without a win from their last 13 matches.

Real Madrid enjoyed a good passage of possession in the first five minutes, but no chance resulted from it.

The home side got into the Madrid defence, forcing Diego to make a save in the tenth minute, the result of which the away side made a counter attack, only for Karim Benzima to be caught offside.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 11th minute from 30 yards out -- with a scorcher that left the home side keeper Stephan Andersen unmoved, Ronaldo’s 21st La Liga goal of the season in 19 appearances.

The goal found the roof of the net after neat work by Angel di Maria from the wing to put it in the path of Ronaldo.

In the 23rd minute Real madrid received a free-kick that Gareth Bale bent into the top corner for the second of the day for the away side, leaving the keeper, unmoved again.

Benzema thought he had beaten the offside trap in the 33rd minute, and found the back of the net, only for the referee to rule it offside after an assist by Gareth Bale.

Betis kept on pushing as Leo Baptistao whipped in a brilliant cross which Ruben Castro missed by inches in the 40th minute.

Benzema finally got onto the score sheet to make it 3-0 from a brilliant assist by Luca Modric in the 45 minute. It was his 100th career goal for Real Madrid.

The second-half started with a freekick for Madrid, Ronaldo took it, and curled it over the bar.

In the 62nd minute, Di Maria fired a low shot from 35 yards, after a corner rebound was headed straight to him, to make it 4-0 for Madrid.

Alvaro Morata capped a good day for Madrid to make it 5-0 to the good in the 90th minute.
