The European transfer window slammed shut at midnight (local time) with record spending in the English Premier League, which could still break the GBP 600 million mark, and some dramatic late twists.
The biggest deadline day story came from the Emirates with Arsenal wrapping up a big-money move for Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil.
After a quiet run in the transfer window by Arsene Wenger, his promise of a marquee signing proved true as Ozil signed on the dotted line in a deal thought to be worth around GBP 42 million.
One of the most surprsing bits of news was the revelation that Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera would not complete a move to Manchester United.
David Moyes was hoping to tie up last-gasp moves for Herrera and Marouane Fellaini. For large parts of the day it seemed that Herrera was destined for Old Trafford but the deal reportedly crumbled at the last minute.
Fellaini is said to have handed in a transfer request at Everton and although at the close of the window neither Everton or United had confirmed a move, media reports claimed that the Red Devils had signed the Belgium midfielder for around GBP 27 million. There was also a late suggestion that United launched a bid to sign Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao on loan.
United announced that promising young midfielder Nick Powell has joined Wigan Athletic on loan.
There was big talk of a tussle between Everton and West Brom for the loan signing of Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku - and it was later confirmed that the Toffees had secured the signing of the promising striker.
The Baggies, though, were boosted by the signing of Stephane Sessegnon from Sunderland, while the Black Cats signed Liverpool's Fabio Borini and defender Andrea Dossena.
Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Tom Carroll are heading to QPR on loan from Tottenham. Swansea announced the signing of Alvaro Vazquez while Crystal Palace brought in Barry Bannan and Adrian Mariappa, Stoke signed Stephen Ireland from Aston Villa, and Peter Odemwingie left West Brom for Cardiff City. Fulham announced the late signing of Elsad Zverotic while Hull City tried to break the bank with a record move for striker Shane Long but reports after the window closed claim that they failed with their move.
Some interesting news from elsewhere in Europe saw Juventus sign Domenico Berardi while Toby Alderweireld and Josuha Guilavogui joined Atletico Madrid.
Transfer news will still filter through over the next few days as last minute dealings are finalised.
