Bayern Bash City

Bayern Munich ran out 3-1 winners at Manchester City in their UEFA Champions League battle on Wednesday night.

The Bavarians were largely the better side and although the Citizens eventually got into the game, the Germans had done enough to leave with the spoils.

The game got off to a fast-paced start with Arjen Robben nodding just over after good work from David Alaba in the second minute.

City responded with Micah Richards powering a header at goal from a Samir Nasri cross but it proved to be easy work for Manuel Neuer in the Bayern goal.

The opening goal would arrive in the seventh minute though as City failed to close down Franck Ribery who unleashed a ferocious drive from distance and Joe Hart let it in at his near post.

The English Premier League side were struggling to get their game going as Robben dragged a ball across the face of goal in the 28th minute while Alaba's ferocious volley came off the chest of Matija Nastasic and into the arms of Hart soon after.

The German giants kept their lead at the break but continued to push forward after the interval and were rewarded 11 minutes in as Thomas Muller tucked away a long ball from Dante.

Robben had seen a shot deflected inches wide before the goal, but Bayern had taken complete control and in the 59th minute Robben cruised past his defender before drilling a shot home to make it 3-0.

Shots from Robben and Toni Kroos had to be saved by Hart soon after as the floodgates threatened to open and Muller smacked the post in the 74th minute.

City, though, finally showed signs of urgency with 15 minutes to go as James Milner tested the goalkeeper and Alvaro Negredo produced a nice turn and finish in the 79th minute.

Their hopes were then boosted when Jerome Boateng was sent off for a late challenge on Yaya Toure - and he was the last man.

David Silva whipped the resulting free-kick against the crossbar while Negredo saw a header drop just wide of the target with three minutes to go.

That proved to be the last chance as City left things a little too late and Bayern secured the win.
