AVB: I Won't Resign

Losing 5-0 at home against a direct rival, no shots on target, the worst defeat at home for sixteen years and the heaviest-ever home league loss to Liverpool. Tottenham Hotspur boss, Andre Villas-Boas, has a lot to explain after yesterday’s embarrassing result against a “spectacular Liverpool”.

However, the under-fire Tottenham boss refused to give up on a top-four Premier League spot and said he won’t resign at White Hard Lane.

The result has left them five points below the Champions League positions in seventh place in the Premier League but the Portuguese manager was adamant that he will not be resigning.

"I have to get down to work," he said when asked about his future.

"That's the only thing I can focus on. The call on that decision (his future) is not mine.”

"I won't resign and I'm not a quitter. The only thing I can do is work hard with the players and try and get the results back on track."

The London side’s manager then stated that the squad was capable of a top four finish and that they still had high expectations for the rest of the season.

"This is a top-four squad but in our Premier League form we are not there," he explained.

"It's not the points tally that's the problem, it's the expression of the results.”

"It's the second expressive scoreline that we've suffered in the season and we admit that in the Premier League things aren't going in any shape or form the way we want.”

"All of us had high expectations for this season, we still have them.”

"Because of the expressive result it makes it even more difficult for us to bounce back."

AVB admitted Brendan Rodgers' side dominated the first half, but Tottenham were on track of getting back into the game until Paulinho's red card changed the fortunes back to The Reds.

“Deservingly at half-time they were 2-0 up. Our response came in the second half, but after the red card for Paulinho, the game was very difficult to turn. The third goal was the killer, it gave them the confidence which we didn’t have,” Villas-Boas said.

“I assume the responsibility of the failure.

“The reality is we had to adapt to some injuries, but we want and can do better.

“Our form in the Premier League is not there, but our ambition to win trophies is still there and our ambition to qualify for the Champions League is still the same.”

Tottenham are now facing West Ham at home in the League Cup and finish the year with Premier League games against Southampton (A), West Brom (H), and Stoke (H) before traveling to Manchester United on New Year’s Day.
