The World XI is an award from the players for the players, with professional footballers from all over the world selecting who they consider to be their best peers.

The International Federation of Professional Footballers (FIFPro) has been in charge of the World XI selection since 2005, and annually asks players to select their favourite XI of the current year.

Around 25 000 footballers take part annually, selecting one goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards, with the most chosen players per position making the final XI.

Alisson Becker was picked in goal following a standout year in which he helped Liverpool to lift their first Premier League title since 1990.

Three Bayern Munich stars made the cut after lifting the treble, namely Alphonso Davies, Joshua Kimmich and Robert Lewandowski.

In addition, Thiago Alcantara, who joined Liverpool ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, also made the World XI.

The Reds dominate the defence after winning their first league title in 30 years, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson and Virgil van Dijk nominated alongside Sergio Ramos.

Kevin De Bruyne takes his place in the midfield, while Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Lewandowski were named up front, leaving no space for the likes of Salah, Mane and Kylian Mbappe.

There was also no space for The Best FIFA Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and neither Neymar nor Kylian Mbappe - you can see this year's World XI by scrolling through the images above!
