The first ever South African Football Hall of Fame is near its completion. Now we discuss the men who have thundered us to glory with their venomous strikes. Two absolute legends of the game, who one would you select for your Hall of Fame, Mark Williams or Phil Masinga?
Mark Williams
At the age of 22, when Wiliams began his professional career with Jomo Cosmos, few would have predicted that he would become a national hero. He is most famously known for the two goals he scored in the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations final to hand South Africa its maiden continental victory, and played for a host of clubs locally as well as in China, Brazil and England. He is also part of the 100-goal club for career goals.
Phil Masinga
The Klerksdorp-born striker, much like Williams, also began his career at Jomo Cosmos (this is testimony to Jomo Sono's scouting intelligence). He featured in the Premier League alongside Lucas Radebe at Leeds United, and also played in Serie A. In 1992, during an Afcon qualifier against Zambia, Masinga became the first South African to receive a red card on the international stage. He would go on to represent South Africa 58 times, and is the fifth highest goalscoring South African of all time, with 18 strikes. Like Williams, he is part of the 100-goal club for career goals.
