Five Talking Points From The Soweto Derby
Soweto derby reborn?
The Soweto derby lived up to all the hype it has received throughout this past week. Unlike the dull draws we've come to witness in this high profile game, this one was certainly worthy of all the excitement. The score line suggests it was a tight affair, but it could have been worse.
Pule, Shonga and Mulenga proving to be a formidable trio
The trio of Vincent Pule, Justin Shonga and Augustine Mulenga constantly put the Chiefs defence under tremendous pressure, especially in the first half. Their exciting interplay is something the Happy People will look forward to seeing in future.
Chiefs defence is not looking strong
The usually reliable Siyabonga Ngezana had a tough day at the office. It wasn't only the youngster who was under pressure, the entire Chiefs defence looked out of sorts. Having given away a penalty, failing to defend a corner and giving away possession cheaply as they conceded the second goal, the Glamour Boys' rearguard were their own worst nightmares today. Three of the four defenders were booked, testament of the pressure they were put under.
Ntshangase too deep. Ineffective going forward
Stash is known for his creativity going forward, however, he has been playing in a central midfield role alongside Willard Katsande in recent matches, arguably limiting his creativity and effectiveness going forward as he now occupies a deeper role in midfield.
Castro rushed back into action, not ready to start.
Leonardo Castro was a doubt going into this encounter. However, the Columbian started the game and looked sluggish and tired, uncharacteristically missing what looked a simple opportunity to finish. His inclusion straight into the starting team raised a few eyebrows and proved an unnecessary gamble, as the striker failed to trouble the Pirates defence.
