Referee Abongile Tom and his two assistants have been praised for their handling of the Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in an Absa Premiership clash at FNB Stadium two weekends ago.
The game finished 1-1, Amakhosi scoring through what some felt was a soft penalty converted by defender Daniel Cardoso, while the Buccaneers levelled matters thanks to attacker Thembinkosi Lorch in the second half.

Speaking to the Siya crew, Tenda Masikhwa, head of referees at SAFA, said the panel from the review committee post the Soweto Derby was one of praise and pride on the performance of the young match officials.
Tom, who handed out seven yellow cards – but no dismissal – was assisted by Athenkosi Ndongeni and Tsepo Nojila.
"After the review panel met last week there was only positive feedback on the performances of these referees," Masikhwa told the crew.
"They were decisive, not controversial. And it just goes to show that we can be proud of the young talented match officials we have in this country. They handled a big game and the report from everyone was positive. It's rare to only hear good things about referees. And we have looked at the game again and had to agree with that assessment of our officials."
