Kaizer Chiefs got back into the thick of things this week as Amakhosi secured a 4-0 win against Zimamoto in a CAF Confederations Cup encounter. However, this weekend their focus shifts to the league where the Naturena-based side are looking to climb up the log table as they face Golden Arrows in an away game.
Ex-Orlando Pirates midfielder, Thulasizwe Mbuyane picks his winner between Abafana Bes'thende and Giovanni Solinas' team as well as other league matches. Do you agree with his choices?
Match of the Week
Golden Arrows v Kaizer Chiefs (Premier Soccer League)
Match 2 Soccer 6 Pool1 December S6 V1 P1
League Rankings: Golden Arrows 11th Kaizer Chiefs 5th
Useful facts: It's going to be interesting to see how Kaizer Chiefs seek to recover from the humiliation of a second loss to their biggest rivals, Orlando Pirates, in the space of a month. The pressure is certainly mounting on both the coach, Giovanni Solinas, as well as the players, who received a bit of a dressing-down from captain Itumeleng Khune in his post-match interview last Saturday. Failure to get maximum points is obviously a scary thought for the Amakhosi faithful, who have clearly made it known that they are not happy with the status quo at Naturena. Their opponents though, Golden Arrows, have their own problems to deal with, as they haven't had things going quite their way so far this season. They will be keen to bounce back from the 2-1 defeat they suffered to Baroka FC before the international break, and what better way than to pile more misery on an already wounded Soweto giant.
Thulasizwe Mbuyane: Kaizer Chiefs win
Highlands Park v Cape Town City (Premier Soccer League)
Match Soccer 6 Pool1 December S6 V1 P1
League Rankings: Highlands Park 10th Cape Town City 8th
Useful facts: Cape Town City seem to be experiencing an upsurge in form and have found their scoring boots in recent games, and therefore Owen da Gama's charge should be wary of them, although home advantage could be the deciding factor in the end. This is likely to be a hard-fought encounter, with only one point separating the two teams on the league table. Benni McCarthy's men will know that a loss could see them back at the wrong end of the table, while Highlands Park, who have played six draws in their 10 league games so far, have to realise there is more than one point up for grabs in a football game.
Thulasizwe Mbuyane: Highlands Park win
Orlando Pirates v Maritzburg United (Premier Soccer League)
Match 5 Soccer 6 Pool1 December S6 V1 P1
League Rankings: Orlando Pirates 1st Maritzburg United 15th
Useful facts: The Buccaneers are riding the crest of a wave and are odds-on favourites to dispatch of a Maritzburg United side that has not had things going their way so far this season. The kind of football that Orlando Pirates play, as well as their form in front of goal, could be too hot to handle for the Pietermaritzburg-based side. For so-called smaller sides, there is often no motivation needed to face the big teams and Fadlu Davids will hope that his charges will be up to the task and a win in this encounter could be the start of a change in fortunes. They will need to do better in front of goal though, as they have scored a paltry four goals in nine league games, which is the lowest amount in the league.
