This week, the Football League Cup enters into the third round as Liverpool take on Chelsea, while in the PSL, there is only one fixture between Baroka FC and Free State Stars that is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, 26 September.
Former Bloemfontein Celtic midfield maestro, Soul Mmethi took time out to pick his winners for this week's encounters. Do you agree with his choices?
Match of the Week
Liverpool v Chelsea (Football League Cup)
Match 3 Soccer 6 Pool 25 Sept S6 V1 P2
League Rankings: Liverpool 1st Chelsea 3rd (English Premier League)
Useful facts: Tonight is the night as the giants of English football meet in the third round of the early-season knockout competition. Seeing trophies the kind of the Football League Cup present the so-called smaller teams from lower leagues with the opportunity to dream big and go shoulder-to-shoulder with the big guns, a comprehensive victory for either side at this stage of the tournament will send a big message to fellow competitors, big or small. The fixture is also a precursor to this Saturday's Premier League encounter between the two sides at Stamford Bridge. There's reason to believe the Reds and the Blues will reserve their energy for the weekend game, but there are bragging rights at stake, with Liverpool having last won this trophy in 2011/12 and Chelsea in 2014/15. The last time the two met, in May, Chelsea ran out 1-0 winners, so throw in the small matter of revenge and you have a game on your hands.
Soul Mmethi: Liverpool win
Baroka FC v Free State Stars (Premier Soccer League)
Match 1 Soccer 6 Pool 25 Sept S6 V1 P2
League Rankings: Baroka FC 15th Free State Stars 10th
Useful facts: It does not rain but pours for Baroka FC, who have only won one in seven league games so far, conceding nine goals. They will be out to redeem themselves in the only league encounter this week after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Orlando Pirates last weekend, but in Free State Stars, they are up against a side that did well to dust themselves off after a setback against Kaizer Chiefs to beat Highlands Park by a narrow margin. It's difficult to tell who needs the victory more between Wedson Nyirenda and Luc Eymael, as both coaches are under increasing pressure to deliver results, with the halfway mark of the season looming on the horizon. The last time the two teams did battle, in February, Ea Lla Koto bagged a 2-0 victory at home, and Bakgaga will also be hoping to make full use of their home ground advantage.
Soul Mmethi: Draw
Arsenal v Brentford (Football League Cup)
Match 2 Soccer 6 Pool 25 Sept S6 V1 P2
League Rankings: Arsenal 6th (English Premier League) Brentford 7th (Championship)
Useful facts: Arsenal are susceptible to shock defeats at the hands of so-called lower division sides in competitions of this nature, but when they turn it on, they are unstoppable. The Gunners will be hoping to continue with their winning momentum after dispatching of Everton with a 2-0 scoreline in the Premier League last Sunday. Meanwhile, the visitors laboured to a 1-0 victory over Cheltenham in the previous round of the tournament and they will be well aware that they face a sterner test against Unai Emery's side. However, a victory could be on the cards for the Bees if they put on a top defensive display.
Soul Mmethi: Arsenal win
