Goss: They Don't Sign Foreign Goalkeepers

Ricardo Goss probably felt like an outsider recently during Bafana Bafana's 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

After Veli Motha's big error against Uganda at Orlando Stadium, a whole lot of South Africans were calling for Sipho Chaine to start the following match against South Sudan, forgetting that Goss exists as an option in goal. It was as if he had not been part of the national team for longer than Chaine was.

Understandably, after Mothwa made the mistake, Goss thought that he would get an opportunity to play, but he had to accept the fact that Chaine started ahead of him.

"We've always known Veli has always been number two. So that was not a surprise, and it was so unfortunate that he made a mistake when he felt like it was his chance," Goss said during a media day held at Megawatt Park in Sunninghill, Johannesburg.

"And then the second game Sipho gets to start, I just feel like he got it because firstly, he is a quality goalkeeper. And secondly, he has more minutes than us, so it only makes sense when I thought about it. Like I said, everyone wants to play but at the end of the day it is the coach's decision, and we just have to support whoever is playing.

"I also thought it would be a run for me, but at the end of the day the coach made a decision, and I supported Sipho, we still talk even now. We are a team, and it will be interesting who gets the call up now."

PSL clubs have at times gone into the foreign market to sign goalkeepers. In most cases, coaches have shown more trust in foreign goalkeepers than the local ones, and Goss feels it would be good to inherit the system used in Egypt, where they only use local goalkeepers.

"I just think maybe we need to inherit the North Africans, Morocco, Algeria and Egypt because in their leagues they don't sign foreign goalkeepers because they had the same crisis," Goss said.

"So, maybe it is something to look at because I think this is the first time in a while that we actually have four goalkeepers that are actually around the Bafana Bafana camp. I just think we need to trust more on our goalkeepers and unless there is something exceptional like Denis Onyango, Kennedy Mweene, you can bring those people in not to downplay the other guys that are here.

"But I just feel like if you get someone from outside they have to raise the bar or be above us so we also learn from them as much as possible."
