In the months leading up to Pitso Mosimane's 4-year contract extension with Mamelodi Sundowns, speculation was rife with rumours as to why negotiations had taken so long. While many had suggested that it was merely a disagreement regarding Mosimane's ambitions to start a grassroots youth academy, the decorated coach's salary demands were also in question. Exact figures haven't been confirmed yet, but estimates from various news outlets have ranged from R8 million to R16 million per annum. Either way, the extension makes the CAF Champions League winner one of Africa's highest earning coaches.
Ex-Sundowns midfielder Teko Modise, who has experience playing for the Masandawana coach, weighs in on why the extension is important for South African football as whole. "It's always nice to see that some teams respect the coaches that have done so much for them, and also for the coaches to be patient enough to handle those negotiations, and for the two parties to come back and be happy with each other", he stated on SL Radio.
