Chiefs To Pull All The Stops For Prolific Striker?

Chiefs To Pull All The Stops For Prolific Striker?

Kaizer Chiefs are not giving up on signing one of South Africa's top strikers, the Siya crew has been informed.

Despite the reported European interest in Cape Town City forward Khanyisa Mayo, Amakhosi still believe they have a chance to sign the player who is currently second in the PSL's top scorer chart.

Soccer Laduma had previously reported how Mamelodi Sundowns and the Glamour Boys were interested in Mayo and how much he could cost, but that was around the beginning of the season and a lot has changed with both clubs since then.

Chiefs had made a number of signings at the beginning of the season, with the likes of Jasond Gonzalez and Ranga Chivaviro coming in, but their goalscoring problem has not been resolved as they are struggling to put away most of their opportunities.

Now, sources very close to Chiefs have indicated that the club is still monitoring the situation of Mayo with the aim of possibly signing him for the start of next season.

"Chiefs have made another inquiry with Cape Town City about Khanyisa (Mayo). They really want him for next season. They couldn't get him at the start of the season or in January but now they want to pull all stops and get him," said the Siya source.

"Of course it won't be easy because the Citizens have their own price tag on the player due to his value. But they will cross that bridge when they reach there. For now, it is to make sure they have inquired (about the player's services) using the right channels," the source added.

A second Siya source added that a price tag of over R36 million is not scaring Chiefs away.

"Yes, that is the price that the City boss said (he wants) but Chiefs believe if the player moves locally then the price would be negotiated. It won't be easy because there is interest overseas but Chiefs are determined that they will discuss and talk to City about the player and see if he can join them next season," the source observed.

25-year-old Mayo was last season's joint top goal scorer with Peter Shalulile, and in this campaign he is just one goal behind leading scorer, Mamelodi Sundowns' Brazilian star Lucas Ribeiro Costa.

Soccer Laduma contacted Chiefs for a comment but no response was received by the time this story was published.
