Billiat To Accept Salary Cut For A Return?

Billiat To Accept Salary Cut For A Return?

Khama Billiat may have to accept a salary package of less than what he was previously earning for his return to competitive football after more than six months.

Billiat has resurfaced at SuperSport United and is expected to conclude a deal to reunite with coach Gavin Hunt, as reported by the Siya crew.

The former Zimbabwean international last played an official match in May with his rare appearance in Chiefs' final game of the season against Cape Town City.

However, the ex-PSL Footballer of the Season lasted only a few minutes on the field, having come on as a substitute for Ashley Du Preez, before he was replaced due to injury.

Before that, Billiat had been out of action since October 2022 because of injury.

Chiefs had hoped to extend Billiat's contract after his previous deal expired at the end of June but the player opted to leave.

Reports at the time suggested that the 33-year-old would have been required to take a pay cut to have his deal extended, something which the star and his camp allegedly objected.

Billiat is understood to have been one of the highest earners at Amakhosi from when he joined the club in 2018 in one of the shock deals at the time after he left Mamelodi Sundowns.

Having spent the first half of the 2023/24 season without a club, the move to SuperSport is the player's available option at the moment to resurrect his career.

However, a close source has indicated that signing with the Tshwane could mean a downgrade in the star's salary package.

"Firstly, I am happy with the news of Khama Billiat possibly coming back to do what he does best, and that is to play football and entertain fans. Khama is a fan favourite and football fans miss him," said the source.

"The most important thing is for him to come back and play even if on a short-term deal to finish the season and can always assess his options after. So, it isn't about the money but for him to come back and regain fitness. If he signs, you can't expect him to earn what he was getting at his previous club because it is more like a fresh start now," the source said.
