Kaizer Chiefs might have appeared to be having goalkeeping challenges this season, but the club is said to be in no rush about the development of Takalani Mazhamba.
Mazhamba is a reserve team goalkeeper who has been making progress with the DStv Diski Challenge team. Before the start of the season, he had been invited to train with the first team along with a few of his teammates from the reserve side.
However, there has been no decision from the Soweto giants about promoting the 16-year-old as the Naturena outfit continued with seasoned campaigners in Itumeleng Khune and Brandon Petersen, as well as Bruce Bvuma in the first half of the season.
In the last few weeks, Amakhosi have had goalkeeping concerns as Khune has been suspended for disciplinary reasons, while Petersen appeared to be struggling with loss of form. As a result, Bvuma, who has been the third-choice goalkeeper, featured in the last four matches under coach Cavin Johnson.
While Chiefs are understood to be searching for a goalkeeper to replace Bafana Bafana's former number one, whose contract won't be renewed when it expires in June as per the club's confirmation in June, there is a new development regards Mazhamba.
"Takalani Mazhamba has been recalled to train with the first team. He is a young goalkeeper who is showing a lot of potential. But there is no rush on him from the club and he is just being given a chance to learn and grow," a source said.
