As Thulani Serero's contract with UAE side Khor Fakkan FC comes to an end, speculation mounts about the former Bafana Bafana midfielder's next move.
With a successful career abroad and interest from top South African clubs, the decision on whether to return home or continue playing internationally is pivotal.

In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma, former Kaizer Chiefs and Ajax Cape Town defender Dominic Isaacs weighed in on Serero's situation, cautioning him to consider his legacy carefully. Isaacs referenced the experience of Steve Pienaar, another former Bafana Bafana midfielder whose return to South Africa with BidVest Wits did not end as hoped.
"I think it's totally up to him if he still feels he wants to play in the PSL. That's totally up to the individual. He must also go and play where he will be appreciated with no pressure. You know Thulani (Serero) has achieved everything in football, Champions League, you name it. You don't have to mention it," Isaacs told the Siya crew.
"So, if he feels he wants to come home and play it's totally up to him. But with what happened with Steve Pienaar it won't be nice. He came and played at Wits. It wasn't nice. The way things ended on Steven's side, how he retired - it wasn't nice. So, as I said it's up to the individual where he wants to go. If he wants to go to a club where he enjoys football or where there is a lot of pressure and expectations," Isaacs added.

Isaacs also highlighted the changes in perception and expectations that might affect Serero should he decide to return.
"Because now we must also remember that people still think of the Thulani Serero who left South Africa for Europe. They don't have the old, mature Thulani Serero in their minds. So, all these things he must consider. If he feels he has done enough in his career and he doesn't need the baggage of playing in South Africa again it's also good. He has to protect his legacy," Isaacs concluded to Soccer Laduma.
Serero has been one of the standout South African players in Europe over the past decade, initially making a name for himself at Ajax Amsterdam. After some time in Europe, the South African moved to the Middle East. His technical skills and experience would be a significant asset to any team, but the decision to return could hinge on multiple factors, including the quality of life, competitive environment, and personal aspirations.
Serero stands at a crucial juncture in his career. As he contemplates his next steps, the advice from former professionals like Isaacs serves as a reminder of the complexities associated with returning to play in one's home country after a long stint abroad. Whether Serero decides to continue his career overseas or return to the DStv Premiership, his legacy as one of South Africa's finest exports to European football remains intact.
