The writing has been on the wall for McCarthy, who by his own admission, is aware that the curtain might be closing on his two-year spell with the Red Devils.
In his time at Old Trafford, McCarthy has received some glowing reviews from players, particularly from the club's forwards who have benefitted greatly from working with South Africa's all-time leading goal scorer.
But with McCarthy believed to be close to the exit door at United, the 46-year-old is understood to be weighing up his options with the MLS an avenue he is willing to explore.
South Africa already has a growing contingent currently represented in the league from a players' perspective with Njabulo Blom (St Louis City), Cassius Mailula (FC Toronto), Katlego Ntshabeleng (FC Dallas), Bongokuhle Hlongwane (Minnesota FC) and Olwethu Makhanya (Philadelphia Union).
From a coach's perspective, Bradley Carnell is hoisting the flag up high with St Louis City.
McCarthy is understood to have caught the eye of one or two teams, though it remains to be seen what comes of the interest. The next few weeks are set to be interesting for the former Cape Town City mentor's future and where he will next take his talents.
