Radebe: Where Foster Could Play Next Season

Radebe: Where Foster Could Play Next Season

Former Bafana Bafana and Leeds United captain Lucas Radebe feels that it would not be a train smash for national team striker Lyle Foster to go down to the Championship with Burnley and work his way back up.

It was a difficult season for both Foster and Burnley in the Premier League, getting relegated after just one term back in the top flight.

After a promising start to the campaign which saw him scoring three goals in his first five Premier League matches, Foster also had to deal with matters regarding to his mental health and struggled to fully get back to his best for the rest of the season, finishing with five goals in 26 appearances.

He ended up missing out on the Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast earlier, but returned recently as Bafana took on Zimbabwe and Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

"For me, it's not a failure. Going down is not a failure because there is still a lot of competition in the Championship. It will show his character. Obviously, he has to make it himself and he has to make other teams want him. There are opportunities out there, whether you are playing at the lowest or highest level," Radebe told the media.

"He will still be an asset for the national team because he will still be playing football at the highest level, for both country and club. He has done so well and there will always be teams looking for players like that. Surely, he will get his chance to play longer, maybe in the Premier League or somewhere else."

Foster is understood to have attracted interest in the Premier League and outside of England, so he might not be in the colours of Burnley come the start of the 2024/25 season.
