Mentor To Mailula: Return To Downs

Cassius Mailula has been offered advice as he will be working on resurrecting his career after missing out on a place in the Bafana Bafana squad travelling to Cote d'Ivoire for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Bafana are scheduled to depart for Abidjan from Johannesburg today after concluding their preparations with a match on Wednesday against Lesotho which ended in a goalless draw at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Raed: Broos Provides Update On Mvala Ahead Of AFCON

When Bafana coach Hugo Broos announced his final 23-man squad for the tournament in December, for many it came as no surprise that Mailula's name was not there as the Belgian mentor had been clear from the onset that the 22-year-old stood no chance due to his situation at his Major League Soccer club, Toronto.

Mailula has struggled with game time since joining the side from Mamelodi Sundowns in July, having made only three appearances this season.

Broos confirmed in November already that Mailula would not be considered for the tournament due to his situation as experienced internationals Lorenzo Insigne, Deandre Kerr and Federico Bernardeschi have been playing ahead of him.

Limpopo-based talent identification scout Isaac Pula, who is credited for the discovery of Mailula, is suggesting a loan move back to the Brazilians for the lad from Ga-Molepo.

"If I were to advise the player and Sundowns and his agent, I would say that if it's possible, a loan deal for him to come back should be considered. As far as I understand, coach (Rulani) Mokwena is looking for a striker, and here is someone (Mailula) who already knows the club and the coach knows the player in an out, why don't you then work out a deal? That would be my advice if I had the powers. Let him come back and play," said Pula.
