Lyle Foster will be playing topflight football next season no matter what happens in the upcoming transfer window.
But the Bafana Bafana striker has said he would like it to be at Westerlo, where he has spent the 2021/22 campaign on loan and helped them gain promotion to the Jupiler Pro League in Belgium just this past weekend.
"It's what we've been working towards the whole season, from pre-season up to now this has always been the objective – and I must admit it feels nice," Foster, whose parent club is Vitoria Guimaraes in Portugal, told the Siya crew.
It's no secret that Westerlo would love to hold on to the core of the group that finally got them to move up for the lower division, but should Foster go back to his club, who bought him for R20-million two years ago, he'd still be in the topflight.
"I am just excited for what the future holds. On my part, I'd love to stay here if it's possible and if the promotion makes it even more possible, then I am keen. But I think overall it's good for the club, for us as players to have achieved this," he said.
"I think if we all had it our way we would all want to stay here for next season. It will be challenging to play in the topflight again, it will be fun… Tougher teams to play against and a great experience. Some guys have played in the topflight before and some now get the opportunity against good opponents week in week out – test ourselves and get good results."
What about the prospects of fighting for his place in the event that the club recruits fresh faces to beef up the squad next season?
"I mean, we are going there to try also win games, that's important. That's not my department, mine is on the field. What the club attracts has to do with the club. My department is on the field to make sure I do my best every day. I can only respond by showing on the field, training and playing… I am excited by everything, hopefully I do stay," Foster explained.
