Former Bafana Bafana captain, Aaron Mokoena, believes that people will be expecting Steven Pienaar to make the same impact at Orlando Pirates as Benni McCarthy did when he joined the Buccaneers in 2011, if the former Everton midfielder's move is confirmed.
Bucs Set To Meet Pienaar Today?
Pienaar has enjoyed a long career abroad and has recently been linked with a move back to South Africa, with the player himself admitting that he would consider an offer from the club he supported growing up.
Pienaar's former Bafana Bafana teammate has now said that Schillo will have to deal with heightened expectations at the club, given the success of another player with European experience that joined Pirates and won four trophies, Benni McCarthy.
"Who knows if he can (follow in Benni McCarthy's footsteps)," he told Soccer Laduma. "They've had different careers and playing styles. They have different levels of talent. And playing for such a big club comes with a lot of pressure, but it's something Schillo can handle."
"So Benni came and did a job for Pirates and people will be expecting Steven to do the same," he added. "You want that experience; which Pirates will see the value that it brings. It's a big ask, but I'm sure it's doable."
Pirates' Pienaar Interest Confirmed
Aaron Mokoena earned 107 caps for Bafana Bafana, playing alongside both Pienaar and McCarthy in their national team colours.
