The need to use goal-line technology in the PSL has come under the spotlight after Orlando Pirates scored a contentious goal in their 2-0 win over Cape Town City last week.
Pirates' second goal, scored by Patrick Maswanganyi at the far post, was saved just over the goal-line by the Citizens goalkeeper Darren Keet and the goal was given without conclusive evidence that the whole circumference of the ball had crossed the line or not.

In top European leagues like the (English) Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A and UEFA tournaments for club and country, to name a few, goal-line technology has become a standard requirement, where referees get alerted on their watches when the goal crossed the line.
The Citizens head coach Tinkler called for the use of such technology, as he believes the ball did not completely cross the line and says such mistakes by referees and linesmen are costly, as it affected their chances of coming back into the game against the Buccaneers.
"Obviously we'll like to bring (goal-line) technology into our game, because it does make a difference you know," Tinkler said in a press conference.
"Like I said, that should not have been allowed, the ascendancy at that time of the game was with us and we lost the ascendancy because we were 2-0 down.
"At that stage of the game the players stopped believing that we can get into the game, so those mistakes that referees and linesmen are making become extremely costly mistakes, so if we can bring the (goal-line) technology to help, we should be doing that," he said.
There have been reports that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) could finally be implemented in the PSL this season, however, the implementation of goal-line technology seems to be a distant reality.
SAFA Chair of referees committee Victor Gomes indicated that goal-line technology is not part of their agenda yet, as implementing it would be very costly and is a "logistical nightmare", as clubs don't own stadiums.

"But as a matter of interest, I'll get the team just to find out some pricing but I know it's very expensive because it must be in all the stadiums, who is going to cover that? Is it going to be the stadium? Our stadiums are not owned (by clubs), so it becomes a big logistical nightmare but I can get some figures and we can talk about that at a later stage," he said.
Given that the use of VAR is planned only to be trialed in the Nedbank Cup final this season according to Gomes, at the earliest, it would take much more time for the use of goal-line technology to become a reality in the PSL.
