Riveiro, Longest Serving, Most Impactful At Pirates?

Riveiro, Longest Serving, Most Impactful At Pirates?

After Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro became the longest-serving coach at the club, Soccer Laduma looks at his impact compared to other legendary coaches.

After a goalless draw against Stellenbosch on Tuesday, Riveiro became the longest-serving coach at Pirates in the PSL era with 120 matches.

The Spanish coach broke the record previously held by former coach Ruud Krol of 119 games for his three years in charge between 2008 and 2011.

The third longest-serving coach at the Buccaneers in the PSL era is Kosta Papic with 74 games between 2004 and 2006.

Riveiro holds the honour as the most successful coach at the Ghost in the PSL era in terms of trophies won, as he boasts five cups during his nearly three seasons at the club.

Ironically, the second best successful coach when it comes to a trophy haul at Pirates is Krol, who won a treble in his last season, including the league title.

What is missing in the Vigo native's achievements at the Buccaneers is a league title, after finishing second in the Premiership standings in his first two campaigns.

The Dutch coach was unfortunate not to win the league title in his first season, after losing the holy grail to SuperSport United on goal difference, in second position, after both sides finished with 55 points.

The Netherlands legend, however, could not keep up with SuperSport in the 2009/10 season, after Pirates finished in fifth place, 13 points behind Matsatsantsa, who were crowned champions for the third term running.

Krol eventually ended the Matsatsantsa's dominance of the league title with his treble in the 2010/11 campaign.

Former Sea Robbers coach Papic, regarded as one of the best coaches at the in the PSL era, was the unluckiest coach.

Under the Serbian coach, Pirates finished second in the league standings in the 2004/5 season, two points behind champions Kaizer Chiefs.

Papic could not take the heartache of coming second in his second campaign, after losing the title to Mamelodi Sundowns by three points, as he tendered his resignation afterwards.
