Pirates Make U-turn On Mthethwa?

Pirates Make U-turn On Mthethwa?

Orlando Pirates are understood to have made a U-turn on the future of Sandile Mthethwa, who was understood to be on his way out of the club at the start of the season.

The lanky centre-back has been on the books of the Buccaneers since 2016, but he has only spent one full campaign in total with the side. In context, he has had four loan transfers in total, which fuelled speculation that he was headed for the exit door of the Soweto giants.

However, Siya sources have informed this publication that Mthethwa has left a lasting impression on Jose Riveiro.

A source revealed that the Spanish tactician was most impressed with Mthethwa's attitude in training despite his lack of game-time as he found himself behind the likes of Olisa Ndah, Tapelo Xoki and Nkosinathi Sibisi in the Pirates centre-back pecking order.

Despite being used sparingly this campaign, the 26-year-old has given a good account of himself whenever called upon and, as a result, has featured in four of the team's last five league matches – two as a starter and two from the bench.

This after making just one appearance in the opening 21 games. The player has made seven appearances in total for the Buccaneers, who are pushing for a CAF Champions League spot and have a berth in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals.

Mthethwa's new lease on life, according to the source, has seen the Houghton-based outfit have a change of heart and indications are that the defender is likely to stay on beyond the current campaign, with talks of a new contract doing the rounds in the local fraternity.

Despite Mthethwa's minimal game-time, should the player remain at the Buccaneers? Let us know in the comments below!
