Orlando Pirates may have claimed a much-needed first league win of the season in midweek, but coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has been dealt a fresh concern heading into Saturday’s all-important MTN8 semi-final second leg against Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Buccaneers edged Stellenbosch FC 1-0 at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday to get their Betway Premiership campaign off the mark after back-to-back defeats.

However, their celebrations were tempered by the sight of Deano van Rooyen hobbling off injured midway through the first half.
Van Rooyen’s absence could force Ouaddou into a crucial defensive reshuffle ahead of what is arguably his most significant test since taking charge – a do-or-die battle with the reigning league champions for a place in the MTN8 final.
Asked about Van Rooyen’s condition in the post-match press conference, Ouaddou remained cautious:
“I still didn’t discuss it with our medical department. I’m going to do it, and I think we are going to have some exam for him to be sure about what he has. But at the moment, I cannot tell you more about the injury.”
Options at Right-Back
Van Rooyen’s injury leaves Pirates with a decision to make at right-back. One option is Kamogelo Sebelebele, who has impressed in recent outings with goals in consecutive matches, including the first leg strike against Sundowns. However, given his attacking influence, Ouaddou might prefer to deploy the youngster further forward in his natural wing role.
That opens the door for other contenders such as Thabiso Lebitso, Siyabonga Ndlozi and Tshepo Mashiloane, all of whom could be considered as defensive replacements.

Momentum at the Right Time
Despite the injury setback, Pirates will take heart from their midweek performance. Their high-tempo start against Stellenbosch yielded the decisive goal, with Sebelebele firing home a stunning strike in the 15th minute. From there, the Soweto giants controlled much of the contest, though they were made to work hard to preserve their narrow lead as Stellies pressed late on.
The result not only lifted Pirates out of the bottom three in the league standings but also provided a confidence boost ahead of their meeting with Sundowns, where they will need to win for a chance to defend their MTN8 trophy.
