Who Makes The Cut? Pirates’ Likely XI For MTN8 Semi At Orlando

Orlando Stadium will be buzzing on Saturday evening as Orlando Pirates host Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of their MTN8 semifinal clash – a fixture that has all the ingredients of a blockbuster.

For the Buccaneers, this is more than just a semifinal. It’s a chance to reignite their season after a stuttering start in the league and to continue their remarkable dominance in the competition they have made their own over the past three years.

Pirates are chasing history with the possibility of securing a fourth successive MTN8 crown, but standing in their way are the Brazilians, who are desperate to halt their reign.

Pirates booked their place in the last four after a convincing 2-0 win over Polokwane City in the quarterfinals, but their league form has raised concern.

A narrow 1-0 defeat to Sekhukhune United on the opening day was followed by a 2-1 midweek setback away to Marumo Gallants – results that have left the Soweto giants still searching for their first Premiership point of the campaign.

That, however, is where the MTN8 could serve as the perfect distraction. The Buccaneers have developed a reputation as ruthless cup competitors, going unbeaten in many of their knockout matches in recent times, and will be banking on that pedigree to rise above their league troubles.

Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou does face a few personnel challenges. Nkosinathi Sibisi’s availability remains uncertain after missing the Gallants clash, while Olisa Ndah and Makhehleni Makhaula are still sidelined without featuring this season.

In Sibisi’s absence, young defender and vice-captain Mbekezeli Mbokazi has stepped in to lead, offering stability at the back.

Fortunately for the Buccaneers, there is still depth in the squad, and Ouaddou will have no shortage of options as he plots a way past a Sundowns side brimming with quality.
