Among the plethora of local talent the Buccaneers have recruited during the ongoing transfer window, they have also scoured the continent for hidden gems — unearthing Malian midfielder Mariko in the process.
The 22-year-old was signed from Djoliba AC, where he enjoyed a standout 2024/25 campaign, finishing in the Malian top flight as one of the league’s top goalscorers. His exploits paved the way for a move to the Betway Premiership.
Speaking to AfricaFoot, he said: “My season with Djoliba went well. It was an exceptional season for me, even though we weren't able to achieve some common goals.
“It was a very good season for me on a personal level, especially since I finished as best player, joint top scorer and scored the best goal. We won the Super Cup, finished second in the league and also entered the group stage of the CAF Champions League.”
Such was his good form that he attracted interest not only from Pirates, but also from clubs across North Africa. However, he explained that he chose the South African powerhouse because of their rich history and professionalism.

“There were several clubs that contacted me from all over the world, like in Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria. But I joined Orlando Pirates in South Africa. It's one of the biggest clubs on the continent, professional, well-structured, and with a good project,” he added.
“They also showed a lot of interest in me, so I decided to join them. It must also be recognised that it is a professional and very popular championship, and certainly one of the best on the continent.”
