'Mofokeng Ready For Europe'

'Mofokeng Ready For Europe'

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Solomon "Solly" Mathe has voiced his support for the burgeoning talent of Relebohile Mofokeng, suggesting that the 19-year-old Sharpeville-born midfielder is ripe for a move to Europe.

In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma, Mathe drew parallels between Mofokeng's potential journey and the successful European ventures of South African legends like Steven Pienaar and Aaron Mokoena.

Mathe, reflecting on the benefits of embarking on an international career at a young age, highlighted the adaptability and growth opportunities that await young talents abroad.

"I think he has done well this season and if opportunity from overseas arises he needs to go. Remember when Steven Pienaar left for Ajax Amsterdam he was still young and became a household name, even Aaron Mokoena did the same. So, he must go now and grow as a player and he will succeed because he is a clever player," Mathe told the Siya crew.

"Actually it's good when you leave while still young as there is a lot that you avoid in the country which can derail your development and growth. So I would say he should leave now,"  Mathe expressed his belief in Mofokeng's readiness for the next step.

Mathe also touched on the rich footballing heritage of the Vaal region, noting the success of players from the area in both South African and European football.

"To be honest with you I think 90% of Vaal players who played for big teams did well. It's just that people regard Vaal players being as the naughty ones but in terms of doing well for big teams we always excel. And the other thing is everyone knows how Vaal has talent so whenever a player is signed for a big team everyone expects nothing but consistency because most of us who played for big teams did well. And we hope Rele (Mofokeng) can follow in those footsteps and do well for both club and country," Mathe observed.

The Vaal region has indeed produced a plethora of talent that has graced both the local and international stages, including Mokoena, Thabang Rooi, Abia Nale, Mokete Tsotetsi, Steve Lekoelea, Thabo Rakhale, and more recently, players like Siyabonga Ngezana and Kabelo Mahlasela. Mathe's endorsement of Mofokeng not only shines a light on the midfielder's potential but also on the continuous stream of talent emerging from the Vaal.

With the right move, Mofokeng could indeed follow in the illustrious footsteps of his predecessors, carving out a successful career in Europe and contributing to the legacy of South African footballers abroad.
