Fish Tips Sea Robbers To Sink Chiefs

Fish Tips Sea Robbers To Sink Chiefs

Mark Fish has never been one to sit on the fence, and with the Nedbank Cup final just days away, the Orlando Pirates legend is calling it straight — he believes the Buccaneers are going to beat Kaizer Chiefs.

The former Bafana Bafana hardman believes the Soweto Derby final carries very different meaning for the two giants, with Pirates chasing more silverware and Chiefs desperate to avoid another season ending in heartbreak.

“It’s a cup final, so obviously it’s a big game for both teams,” Fish told Showmax Premier League.

“However, if you look at the progress of the two teams, this game is massive for Chiefs, while for Pirates it’s just another game.”

While the Amakhosi camp is clinging to the hope of ending a nine-year trophy drought, Pirates are cruising into the final with momentum on their side — and trophies already in the cabinet.

Fish was quick to remind everyone of that fact, pointing to the Sea Robbers’ CAF Champions League semi-final run and back-to-back Nedbank Cup triumphs as proof of their dominance.

“Pirates have shown consistency and composure under pressure. They’ve been here before and they’ve delivered. Chiefs, on the other hand, are under serious pressure to lift a trophy. Obviously the new coach has been there for a season, but him and the players will understand that this is a very big game for them. It’s a massive occasion.

“It’s not difficult to predict a winner in my opinion. Pirates are the favourites and I expect them to get the job done and handle the expectations of a cup final,” he said confidently.

Fish isn’t the only one tipping the Buccaneers to finish the job. Former Kaizer Chiefs left-back David Kannemeyer also admits the momentum is with Pirates, and that could make all the difference.

“Looking at the current momentum, there’s no doubt that Orlando Pirates are in a rich vein of form,” Kannemeyer told Showmax Premier League. “They’ve been delivering consistent performances and securing crucial victories, which naturally builds confidence within the squad. This positive run will undoubtedly have them feeling prepared and highly motivated for this Nedbank Cup final.”

The pressure is all on Chiefs. The final whistle at Mbombela Stadium will either bring tears of joy or another painful reminder of just how far the mighty have fallen. Fish believes it’s the latter.
