Can Pirates End Their Hoodoo Against Sundowns?

Can Pirates End Their Hoodoo Against Sundowns?

The MTN8 two-legged semi-final encounter between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns can be regarded as a final before the final.

The 2020 champions up against the reigning victors.

The clashes between the sides have produces spectacles over the years but Pirates will be the team with the most to prove.

Sundowns have dominated this fixture in the last two years, with five straight wins over the Buccaneers in all competitions.

The worrying factor for Pirates is that in their last five meetings against the Brazilians they have conceded a whopping 13 goals and scored only two.

Soccer Laduma looks at the positives in the Pirates' team going into the encounter and factors that make Sundowns dangerous, as they look to increase their winning streak against the Soweto giants.

Can the Soweto giants turn the tables?

Solid defence

New Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has built a solid base at the back, with only three goals conceded in eight league matches and he will be hoping to keep Sundowns at bay, who have been free scoring against the Buccaneers.

New signings Nkosinathi Sibisi and Tapelo Xoki have transformed the Buccaneers' defence that looks hard to break down with their three-man central defence.

Sundowns co-coaches Manqoba Mngqithi and Rulani Mokwena have complained about PSL teams playing with a five-man defensive line making it difficult for them and Riveiro's charges will be hoping to keep it tight, to make the match a close contest.

Solution for goals could be imminent

In as much as the Buccaneers' defensive record has been outstanding, they have struggled to score goals, with only six goals scored in eight league matches.

However, transfer deadline day signings Ndabiyethethwa Ndlondlo and Kermit Erasmus could be a new source of goals, given their reputation in front of goals.

Ndlondlo scored ten goals for his former team Marumo Gallants last season while Erasmus is a proven goalscorer, with 52 career goals in the PSL.

Before the international break, Riveiro also confirmed that Bafana Bafana striker Evidence Makgopa was nearing a return from injury.

What makes Sundowns dangerous?

Reinforced attack

Sundowns have strengthened their attack with the likes of Marcelo Allende and Abubaker Nasir, with the former netting three goals in three starts in all competitions.

Meaning, the Brazilians won't only rely on Peter Shalulile and Themba Zwane for goals or a match-winner.

Experience

Unlike Pirates who are rebuilding the squad with a new coach and new players, Sundowns have kept the core of the team that has made the side successful in the domestic league, including co-coaches Mngqithi and Mokwena.
