Veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has weighed in on the shock dismissal of Jose Riveiro by Egyptian giants Al Ahly, describing the move as “sad” but acknowledging the harsh realities of elite football.

Riveiro, who left Orlando Pirates after a successful three-year spell, was appointed by Al Ahly in May 2025. However, after just seven matches and a disappointing run that included a 2–0 defeat to Pyramids FC and a winless Club World Cup campaign, the club terminated his contract by mutual consent.

Khune, speaking to the Siya crew in reaction to the news, admitted the decision came as a surprise.

“That one caught us by surprise. Very sad to see coach Rivero being sacked. No one saw that coming. We know what he has done in South African football. We know what he has achieved and we wish him everything of the best.”

“That team, it's demanding. That team, every season they have to win a trophy. So, I don't blame Al Ahly for the decision they've made. Because this is what we need in South African football. Not to say, give a coach five games and sack him.”

Riveiro’s tenure at Pirates saw him lift five domestic trophies and guide the club to a CAF Champions League semi-final. His move to Al Ahly was seen as a step up, but expectations were sky-high.

“He has gotten more chance to show what he's bringing on the table at the Club World Cup. And things didn't work out, things didn't go as planned. And obviously, we judged him based on that.”

“This is business. If results don't come your way, someone has to take the blame. And someone has to get sacked, unfortunately. And me, personally, I would have loved him to keep his job for longer. But unfortunately, things didn't work out.”
