Broos: I Think Rele Will Not Be A Player Of Pirates Anymore

Broos: I Think Rele Will Not Be A Player Of Pirates Anymore

Relebohile Mofokeng during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier match between South Africa and South Sudan at DHL Stadium on 19 November 2024 in Cape Town, South Africa.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos feels Relebohile Mofokeng will not be at Orlando Pirates within the next few months, but there's one big concern he has regarding the future of the young man popularly known as 'president ya ma2000'.

Mofokeng is in a period of his life where there's so much talk about his future. Many people have an opinion on where he should go and he probably has people around him giving advice on which countries could be best for him.

He's already attracted interest from clubs in Europe, reportedly Barcelona B and Glasgow Rangers, but whatever happens in the coming months, Broos just wants the player to make a decision that will be good for his career and not necessarily be motivated by the money he will make.

As things stand, Mofokeng has a good chance of making it into the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations squad, but a wrong move - if he leaves of course - will jeopardise his chances of playing in Africa's biggest football competition.

Speaking to media at a round table discussion held at the SAFA offices on Thursday morning, Broos expressed his view on Mofokeng and is hoping that the young Buccaneer will make the right move at this phase of his career.

"I just hope that he makes the right decisions and that he is not going to a team where he will not play. I see all these things around him…Barcelona, Rangers. I am a little bit afraid. I just hope the people around him make a choice of the best sporting decision and not the best financial decision," Broos said.

"I don't think I have that influence (to tell Mofokeng) than the people around him. Let's hope, but we will see. I think in June, I think Rele will not be a player of Pirates anymore. But a good choice is very important.

"I've said it the first year when he came in the team, because there was a lot of interest in him. I said it to him also. I said 'just stay one year more. You play Champions League with Pirates. You will have experience in the PSL. It's too soon to go'. That was already a good choice he made, to stay at Pirates. Now, he has to make the choice (about) playing. Maybe he can go to Barcelona in two or three years and he will be more stronger than now. He is a nice guy and he has a lot of talent, but when he comes to Barcelona he is just Mofokeng. And then when you talk about Rangers…what is Rele going to do in Scottish competition where the ball is in the air? He will not play there, even with the talent that he has. This is not the style of football for Rele and this is what I mean when I say, 'making a good choice for him'."

With a vast knowledge of football in Europe, Broos has given his thoughts on the career that would best suite the 20-year-old.

"He can go to Belgium. He can go to Holland. He can go to France. He can go to Portugal. Not immediately in a big team. But he doesn't have to go to Italy, for example. He doesn't have to go to Germany. Maybe in two or three years, but now I don't think he is ready to go in such a competition."

It will be an interesting few months for Mofokeng, with a big possibility of making a move abroad.
