Local Or Foreign For Next Pirates Coach?

Local Or Foreign For Next Pirates Coach?

Amidst the debate on which coach would be a perfect replacement for the Jose Riveiro at Orlando Pirates, former club coach Fadlu Davids has suggested a name.

Following the departure of Riveiro, on one hand, the local versus foreign debate would be going on, particularly after the Spaniard's success at the Soweto giants.

On the other hand, there would be a sentiment of a return of a co-coaching, especially if the Buccaneers go local, as Mandla Ncikazi spent almost three seasons with Riveiro and would know what worked for the Vigo native.

Should the Ghosts go local, numerous names have been among the rumour mill.

However, Davids, who worked alongside Josef Zinnnauer as an assistant coach and Ncikazi as co-coaches, believes the moment is perfect for the return of Rulani Mokwena, who ironically, is without a club after leaving Wydad Casablanca.

"(Pirates) should look no further than coach Rulani, he would be the perfect fit. He knows the club, he knows the chairman, he plays the type of football that Pirates enjoys," Davids said on Mike Morton Talks Football YouTube Channel.

"His time over that period with 'Micho' (Milutin Sredojevic) they built something that challenged Sundowns. I think it's a perfect moment, he has matured.

"He had a tough time at Wydad but it would only make him stronger. I think it's a perfect moment for him to come and build his own thing at Pirates. When he took over (as interim head coach) it was a difficult moment in the season," Davids suggested.

Mokwena had his worst spell as a coach in charge of Ezimnyama, as a caretaker coach in 2019, after he was relieved of his duties following a poor 28 percent winning rate between August and December, with only four victories from 14 matches.

Even though he was successful at former club Mamelodi Sundowns, the 38-year-old coach left Wydad with a winning rate of 40 percent, after he managed only 14 wins from 35 matches.
