Why Pirates Could Be Happy Facing Downs At FNB Rather Than Orlando

Judging by the statistics, Orlando Pirates could be relieved that they will be playing Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium instead of Orlando.

The revenge sting has somewhat being taken away from the Betway Premiership between Pirates and Sundowns this Sunday, as the clash was moved away from Orlando Stadium to FNB Stadium.

The emotions were most likely to be higher at Orlando Stadium, after the Buccaneers suffered a 4-1 humiliation in the first round clash in February at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

However, the reality is, the Brazilians have been almost flawless against the Ghosts at Es'godini in the last four years in the league.

Masandawana have won the last four league clashes against Pirates at Orlando Stadium, a winning streak which started with a 3-0 victory in May 2021 when Lyle Lakay, Peter Shalulile and Ricardo Nascimento were on target.

The Tshwane giants went on to win 2-0 at Orlando the following season, with Shalulile netting a brace.

Masandawana also edged the last two meetings between the sides at Es'godini 1-0 with Cassius Mailula and Lucas Ribeiro Costa scoring.

In all the last four games at Orlando Stadium, the Bucs are yet to score against Sundowns.

The Soweto giants last beat the Brazilians in the league at home back in January 2020 when they narrowly got past 1-0 thanks to a goal by former striker Gabadinho Mhango.

So playing Masandawana at FNB Stadium could actually suit the Ghosts, who have been far more competitive playing against Sundowns on a neutral ground, particularly in cup matches.

In recent games against Masandawana on a neutral ground, Pirates thrashed 'Ka Bo Yellow' 3-0 in the MTN8 semi-final second leg at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The Ghost were also more competitive against the Tshwane giants in the MTN8 final one-and-half year ago, when they won the cup on penalties after a goalless draw at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The Buccaneers also stunned Sundowns 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup final last season which was played at Mbombela Stadium.
