New Signing On Target As Pirates Remain Unbeaten

New Signing On Target As Pirates Remain Unbeaten

Orlando Pirates and Granada could not be separated after playing to a 1-1 draw in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday evening.

Coach Jose Riveiro handed a start to new signing Gilberto in place of Relebohile Mofokeng, while there was also a return for midfielders Patrick Maswanganyi and Makhehlene Makhaula.

It was a bit cagey in the early stages of the first half, with both sides feeling each other out without creating too much danger at either end.

That all changed on 20 minutes when Maswanganyi did well to play in Gilberto, who sent a first-time strike into the far corner for his first goal in a Buccaneers shirt.

The Spanish outfit weren't behind for too long as Shon Weissman pulled his side level with a first-time volley from just inside the box after the Soweto giants failed to clear their lines.

Riveiro did have to make an alteration in the first half, with striker Evidence Makgopa being withdrawn for Tshegofatso Mabasa, although the club did not confirm if it was injury related.

The second half continued in similar fashion to the first, with the both teams moving the ball around without creating any clear-cut chances in the box.

The Buccaneers waited until the hour mark to refreshen the side by swapping out the entire team, which saw Siyabonga Dladla get minutes in the goal while new signing Selaelo Rasebotja also among the changes.

Pirate nearly went ahead soon after when Mabasa was slipped through on goal, however the striker's goal-bound strike was cleared off the line and recovered by goalkeeper Luca Zidane.

That proved to be the final clear-cut opening as the two sides had to settle for the draw, while Pirates will take on Al Sadd in their final game on Friday evening.
