In one of the matches leading up to Stars' semi-final loss to Mamelodi Sundowns that season, Komphela's team managed to beat Chiefs out of the competition.
It was on 14 April 2012 that Komphela's Stars upset Amakhosi with a 1-0 win in a quarter-final match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, thanks to a Dove Wome goal.
Prior to eliminating Chiefs from the competition, Komphela had guided Stars to another impressive win, against Orlando Pirates in the last 16 stage of the competition.
